2007 Best Practice Awards

The sixth annual UC/CSU/CCC Sustainability Conference was held June 24-27, 2007 at UC Santa Barbara. The two-page case studies below document the outstanding energy-efficiency and sustainability achievements of the 2007 Best Practice Award recipients. The winning projects are excellent examples of innovative and cost-effective green building technologies, design strategies, and building operation practices being implemented on campuses across the state.

Best Overall Sustainable Design

Central Plant

UC Merced Central Plant & Classroom and Office Building
These projects demonstrate an integrated approach to building a more sustainable campus from the bottom up. Both projects have earned LEED-NC Gold certification, making UC Merced the first UC campus with two projects certified at Gold or higher.

Student Recreation Center

CSU Fullerton Student Recreation Center
Students were heavily involved in the design of the new Student Recreation Center, weighing in on its sustainable design features and program. Striving for LEED-Gold certification, the center is the second building at CSU Fullerton to win a Best Practice Award for Best Overall Sustainable Design.

Best HVAC Design

AIRC

CSU Sacramento Underfloor Air System
The underfloor system at the new Academic Information Resource Center integrates mechanical and telecommunication infrastructure into a single underfloor plenum. Air is supplied into the occupied zone through local floor diffusers with individual controls, improving occupant thermal comfort.

Best HVAC Retrofit

UC Santa Cruz Server Virtualization
Server virtualization is helping UCSC manage growth in its constrained data center. So far the campus has consolidated 54 individual servers onto just 8 physical machines. A virtual server uses 1/8 the power and cooling of a standalone server, resulting in large energy savings for the campus.

Coussoulis Arena

CSU San Bernardino Direct Digital Controls
Upgrades to the ventilation control system in the Coussoulis Arena reduce energy use during part load conditions. The HVAC system uses carbon dioxide sensors to detect the level of occupancy and variable frequency drives to adjust the amount of supply air delivered to the space.

Best Lighting Retrofit

Webster Hall bathroom

UC Davis Bathroom Vanity Lighting Retrofit
Designed specifically for bathrooms, the hybrid vanity lighting system uses an occupancy sensor and LED nightlight to reduce the time the overhead fixture is on. UC Davis retrofitted 83 bathrooms in Webster Residence Hall with the hybrid system and achieved energy savings of 50%.

CSU San Bernardino High-Efficiency Retrofits
CSUSB reduced its lighting electricity consumption by 28% by retrofitting existing light fixtures and installing energy-saving lighting technologies across campus. Compact fluorescents, LED exit signs, HID lighting and occupancy sensors save the campus 1.9 million kWh annually.

Renewable Energy Generation/ Procurement

UC Santa Cruz Campus Climate Challenge
UCSC students passed a ballot initiative to raise tuition fees by $3 per semester to fund the purchase of renewable energy credits. Enough credits are purchased to offset 100% of UCSC's electricity use, making it the 6th largest campus purchaser of green power in the nation.

CSU Northridge One Megawatt Fuel Cell
CSUN's fuel cell power plant is the largest in operation at a higher education institution in the world. It produces 18% of the campus’s base electricity load and 22 billion BTU each year. The highly efficient and ultra-low emission facility also reduces CSUN's contribution to climate change.
